Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

Prior to any treatment being performed on you, a consultation is mandatory. There are no exceptions!

The Consultation

It’s very important that we make sure laser hair removal is safe and suitable for you. What does this mean exactly?

First and foremost, we need to ensure there are no contradictions that would exclude you from receiving the treatment.

We then need to ensure that your hair can actually be treated (eg. is it dark and thick enough). Assuming it can be treated, a patch test will be performed to determine how your skin responds to the laser energy. All of this helps us to develop a base-line for future treatments.

We’ll advise you of any specific pre and post care you need to follow, inform you of the possible risks and side-effects and make sure we answer any questions you may have.

Laser treatments can not be received on the same day as your consultation. You must wait a minimum 24-48 hours before booking your laser treatments.

Make no mistake – there are some dodgy, unprofessional operators out there that will perform treatments on you the day of your consult, or without having performed a professional consult. This is a disaster waiting to happen and more often then not, the results will be dismal at best. It’s just not worth the risk – financially or for health and safety reasons. You deserve better!

If you’d like a more detailed explanation as to the importance of a consultation, check out our skin journal post.

Before Treatment

You must read and follow the pre- and post-care advice at all times. Advice specific to you may also be provided during the consultation.

What to expect during Laser Hair Removal

The treatments are generally well tolerated by most however you can expect some minor discomfort, especially on more sensitive areas of the body.

Prior to treatment, we ensure that it’s safe and suitable for the treatment to go ahead as planned. It’s very important that you’ve read and followed the pre and post care provided to you. Failure to adhere to these instructions may results in the treatment not going ahead.

Assuming all is well, the treatment will go ahead. You’ll be provided with a pair of safety goggles to wear and these must remain on at all times. Only when instructed should you remove these.

Laser light is dangerous for the naked eye, and there potential for instant and irreversible blindness. Please pay attention to your clinician at all times and follow the instructions given.

Some discomfort is to be expected. You can liken it to a rubber-band snapping against your skin. Having said that, some people feel next to know discomfort at all. It really is individualised and you wont really know yourself until you’ve personally experienced it.

You should wear lose fitting clothing both before and after your treatment. We do not advise wearing things like tight jeans and active wear (tights).

While there will be some form of warmth, it should never be hot. If you experience any kind of excessive heat, you should let the clinician know immediately.

What to expect after Laser Hair Removal

The treatments are generally well tolerated by most however you can expect some minor discomfort, especially on more sensitive areas of the body.

Some people experience bumps during and immediately after Laser Hair Removal treatment. This is called ‘perifollicular edema’ and it looks like little mozzie bites on the skin. The severity can vary from person to person. This usually settles on its own within an hour or two, but in rare cases may last 2-3 days.

Post Care Advice & Recommendations

The information provided below is general in nature only. You’ll be advised of post care specific to you during your consultation and/or post treatment. You should always follow this advice!

You must avoid all heat based activities for at least 24 hours post treatment. This means no saunas, no gym, no hot showers, no swimming, no standing in front of heaters! Take the opportunity to chill-out, relax and enjoy the downtime for a moment knowing that you’re doing your body the world of good.

  • Do not expose the area to the sun (wear protective clothing and apply SPF 30+ or higher, daily)
  • We recommend using a post treatment gel such as Aloe Vera as frequently as desired to keep the skin cool, calm and hydrated.
  • It’s advised to wear loose fitting clothing after your treatment. It’s best to avoid tight jeans and activewear (tights).

Do not wax, pluck or tweeze the hairs between treatments. You’re welcome to shave, clipper or trim as frequently as desired.

You must follow all Pre & Post Treatment Advice at all times.

Laser Hair Removal FAQs, Advice & Recommendations

It all depends on the area of the body we are treating. Some areas require treatments sooner, while others you can wait longer. Although it may be more convenient to combine treatments together in a single appointment, it generally won’t yield the best results.

  • For Facial hair: book every 6-8 weeks
  • For Body hair/arms: book every 8-10 weeks
  • For Back/Leg Hair: book every 10-12 weeks

Use the above as a guide when planning your appointments.

This is known as under-treating. It’s a common tactic used to get you to return sooner for more treatments, which means more money for the clinic. Clinics doing this will often state that you’ll need 8-12+ treatments to see results and/or reach a maintenance stage. You’ll need this many treatments because you’re not targeting the hairs at the optimal intervals. Treating too early will result in less effective treatments, in turn requiring you to undergo more treatments then necessary.

In addition, these same clinics will usually try and get you to pre-purchase large packs of treatments – often within the 10+ range.

Treating every 4 weeks could also indicate the clinic/person performing the treatments doesn’t know what they are doing.

If you don’t see significant results in 1-3 treatments, then you should consider going elsewhere!

Laser Hair Removal offers long-term results – it’s a permanent hair reduction option and in same cases, that reduction can be in excess of 80-90%. After your initial course of 3-6 treatments (on average) you’ll only have to return twice a year (on average) for maintenance.

Now compare that to something like waxing. You’ll need to visit every 4-6 weeks ongoing, forever, to keep the hair under control.

Although laser hair removal has a much greater upfront cost, the long-term savings are substantial!

Hair removal with laser can permanently reduce the total number of body hairs but will not permanently remove all hair.

While existing hair loss is permanent this does not prevent the growth of new hairs. No laser or IPL can guarantee permanent hair removal.

Response to laser hair removal varies considerably between people. Some clients may have hormonal factors stimulating hair growth which results in more treatments.

This will depend on a number of factors including skin type, thickness of the hair and colour, as well as which part of the body is being treated.

As a general guide, it usually takes about 3-6~ treatments every 6-8~ weeks.

We can provide you with a more accurate assessment which is specific to you during your consultation.

We do not use IPL/SHRD.

We use high-quality, world-class laser from Cutera – one of the most trusted and highly recognisable names in the industry. We can treat quickly, comfortably and effectively. The Cutera Excel HR utilises sapphire contact cooling to maximize your comfort and safety.

Short answer… yes and no! Everyone’s pain tolerance varies.

Your comfort and safety are paramount and that’s why we’ve opted for a state of the art, medical grade laser. The Cutera Excel HR uses sapphire contact cooling which ensures your Laser Hair Removal treatments are as pain free and as comfortable as possible.

Having said that, some clients may feel a minor stinging sensation when the laser is fired. Some clients liken the sensation to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Usually this is experienced in more sensitive areas of the body though.

You should never be in a state of unbearable pain though. If you are, please ensure you inform the clinician.
